Thie ny Gaelgey is the old school in the village of St. Judes, Kirk Andreas, not the first school as that was across the road next to the Church which was consecrated in 1841, but one of the new Manx ‘Board Schools’ of the late 19th century. As the countryside became depopulated during the 20th century it ended its days as an infant school when it was closed in 1982. Its revival as a Manx Language Centre came about by agreements between the then Department of Education and Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh in 1986 and 1996, and it is used for language teaching, has a Gaelic library for students, and a Gaelic bookstore, as well as its community use by local groups, including the Friends of St. Jude’s Church and the Gaelic choir, Cliogaree Twoaie.
